Elsa had previously modelled in Mexico and had won a modelling contest in Costa Rica but was 'discovered' at the age of 19 after her agency sent some pictures to photographer Steven Meisel who asked her to come to New York. She worked with him for an Italian Vogue cover and story and her career took off from there.
